Protect your pit-ly paradise
The chemicals in traditional deodorants have the potential to cause: breakouts, rashes, cysts, itching & abrasions, irritation, swelling, accumulation of toxicants in the lymph nodes, and many more serious health issues like Alzheimer's and breast cancer.
Did you know your armpits can absorb up to 100% of chemicals and toxicants applied to them? (1)
-
Parabens
Parabens can disrupt hormone balance in the body, specifically by mimicking estrogen. This hormonal disruption has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. Parabens can also cause skin irritation and allergies in some, and their persistent contamination of the environment raises environmental concerns.
-
Talc
The main risk associated with talc is its potential contamination with asbestos fibers, which are known carcinogens. Research has indicated that talcum powder contaminated with asbestos can lead to ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. While cosmetic-grade talc is required to be asbestos-free, there have been many instances of contamination, leading to safety recalls.
-
Aluminum
Aluminum temporarily blocks sweat ducts, so sweat can accumulate in breast tissue and lymph nodes which can causing swelling, drainage issues, and irritation. Studies suggest a connection between aluminum exposure and neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease. It's also healthy to sweat, sweating cools the body down, aids with circulation and "delivers more nutrients to your skin via increased blood flow" (2).
Can you even pronounce the ingredients in one of the most popular deodorants?
Triclosan
Triclosan is an artificial antibacterial chemical that is considered a pesticide by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has been banned by the FDA for use in antiseptic hand washes. It has also been banned in other countries. "Recent evidence suggests that triclosan may play a role in cancer development" (4). Cancer Therapy states, "Triclosan can displace estradiol from its receptors and potentially increase exposure to estradiol, which has been a risk factor identified for the development of breast cancer" (5). Triclosan is known to persist in the environment and can accumulate in water systems. It can harm aquatic ecosystems and has been found in fish and other wildlife. Its environmental impact has raised concerns about its long-term effects on ecosystems. In some individuals, triclosan-containing products can cause skin irritation, allergies, or contact dermatitis. This is particularly true for those with sensitive skin. Due to these concerns, regulatory agencies in various countries, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have taken steps to prohibit the use of triclosan in certain products. In 2016, the FDA banned the use of triclosan and several other antimicrobial agents in consumer antiseptic wash products, stating that manufacturers did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of triclosan in those products.
Phthalates
Phthalates can act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone function in the body. They have been associated with adverse health effects, including breast cancer and disruptions in reproductive and developmental processes. Phthalates can be absorbed through the skin, potentially leading to toxic exposure.
Aluminum Zirconium Trichlorohydrex Gly
Aluminum Zirconium Trichlorohydrex Gly, commonly found in antiperspirant deodorants, works by clogging sweat ducts in the sweat glands. Studies suggest that aluminum can be absorbed through the skin and accumulate in the nearby lymph nodes. This action can potentially lead to swelling, irritation, itching, and disruption of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for filtering and draining waste products and toxins from the body, and lymph nodes are a crucial part of this system. Some individuals have also expressed concerns that the accumulation of aluminum in lymph nodes could be linked to health issues, including breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. However, the scientific evidence on this topic remains inconclusive and is a subject of ongoing research.
Cyclopentasiloxane
Cyclopentasiloxane is not readily biodegradable and can contaminate the environment, contributing to water pollution and ecological disruption. As such, its environmental impact has raised regulatory scrutiny in some regions. While the direct health risks of Cyclopentasiloxane in deodorants appear to be minimal for most users, its environmental persistence is a matter of concern, and responsible disposal practices are essential to mitigate its impact on ecosystems.
PPG-14 Butyl Ether
PPG-14 Butyl Ether, commonly used in personal care and cosmetic products, presents risks associated with skin/eye irritation, respiratory harm, and environmental pollution. It may cause skin and eye irritation, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin, and inhalation of volatile compounds from products containing this ingredient can lead to respiratory damage. Additionally, its improper disposal could contribute to environmental pollution.
Our Ingredients
Raw Honey
Body odor is caused by bacteria on your skin coming into contact with your sweat, and honey is a natural antibacterial and antimicrobial. Honey exhibits a "broad-spectrum of antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant (MRSA) ones" (3). We use this unpasteurized raw Manuka honey which has a wider range of antibacterial properties than traditional honey in addition to antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits, and this raw unprocessed, unfiltered honey straight from the Honest Raw Honey Beehives.
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot Powder is a natural, eco-friendly antiperspirant-- it is highly absorbent so that it can absorb excess sweat, and maintain dryness in the underarms. Its gentle, skin-friendly nature makes it a preferred choice for individuals with sensitive skin, while also offering a smooth, dry texture. Arrowroot powder is used as an alternative to talc and aluminum compounds found in traditional deodorants. It aids in odor control when combined with other ingredients.
Shea butter & Coconut oil
Shea butter and coconut oil provide multiple benefits in natural deodorants, offering deep nourishment, effective moisture control, and skin soothing properties. They contribute to a pleasant scent while nourishing the skin with vitamins and antioxidants. Shea butter contains vitamins A, E, F, and K, while coconut oil contains vitamins E and K, all of which contribute to skin health, soothing, and provide antioxidant benefits. These natural, well-tolerated ingredients promote skin health, making them suitable for individuals with sensitive skin, and are eco-friendly and safe.
Beef Tallow
1. Anti-aging
Beef tallow is rich with antioxidants and essential vitamins that are crucial for combating the signs of aging. Just to name a few, conjugated linolenic acid stimulates skin regeneration, as it "has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been shown to stimulate keratinocyte proliferation and epidermal regeneration" (1). Palmitoleic acid (antioxidant & omega 7) deeply restores and heals your skin. Tocopherols & tocotrienols are forms of vitamin E that protect cells from oxidative stress.
2. Deeply repairing & moisturizing
Beef tallow penetrates deeply into the skin with its high oleic acid content (omega 9). Oleic acid repairs dry skin and boosts the absorption of other beneficial ingredients, ensuring long-lasting suppleness and moisturisation. Vitamin K also deeply restores and heals the skin.
3. Rich in essential vitamins and nutrients
Packed with vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, beef tallow delivers essential nutrients that promote healthy, youthful skin.
4. Natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) provides ample anti-inflammatory benefits. Tallow's antibacterial and antimicrobial properties help protect the skin from infections and irritations, keeping it healthy and clear.
5. Environmental protection
It is rich with antioxidants which enhance the skin's protective barrier. Palmitic acid also strengthens the skin’s protective barrier, preventing moisture loss and shielding the skin from pollution, UV rays, and environmental damage.
Our Ingredients (cont.)
Plant & flower essential oils
Essential oils are natural substances derived from plants. They are extracted from the leaves, flowers, stems, bark, or roots, through processes like steam distillation, enfleurage, or cold pressing. Essential oils are concentrated forms of the plant's aromatic compound, and have a strong fragrance and various potential therapeutic properties.
It's important to note that while essential oils are natural, they are highly concentrated and potent. Therefore, we are use them with care and in accordance with safety guidelines, ensuring that we dilute them properly and specifically use the safest types. Some people may have sensitivities or allergies to certain essential oils such as tea tree oil which we DO NOT use, and improper use can lead to adverse reactions. We always dilute our essential oils as recommended. Consult with a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare professional if you have specific concerns or questions about their use. We offer an essential oil free formula for those with sensitivities.
Candelilla wax
Candelilla wax is a natural, plant wax obtained from the leaves of the candelilla shrub, scientifically known as Euphorbia cerifera. It is plant-based and an excellent alternative to beeswax, making it suitable for vegan and cruelty-free products. It has dual anti-perspirant benefits: it helps absorb and control moisture, which can be helpful in reducing sweat and keeping underarms dry; and it forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping the deodorant stay in place and effective throughout the day. It can also help stabilize and prolong the scent of essential oils or fragrances used in deodorants.
Baking Soda
Baking soda's alkaline nature balances the pH of the skin to create an unfavorable environment for odor-causing bacteria. By eliminating these odor-causing bacteria on the skin, your sweat will have no odor. Baking soda is the most powerful natural odor killer, and it provides all day freshness.
Sperry Honey Farm Beeswax
Beeswax serves as a natural thickening and solidifying agent, giving the deodorant its desired consistency while creating a protective barrier on the skin, and aiding in scent retention, moisture control, and the longevity of the deodorant's effectiveness.
Milk of Magnesia
Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) has odor control and antiperspirant properties. It provides moisture control, and its alkaline nature creates a pH environment that is less conducive to the growth of odor-causing bacteria. It is naturally occurring in the form of the mineral, brucite.
Zinc Oxide
Zinc oxide (ZnO) or the mineral zincite is natural antibacterial that is commonly used in sunscreens. Zinc oxide has antimicrobial properties, which means it can help inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria on the skin, helping to control body odor. We use non-nano zinc, which is comprised of particles of zinc that are too large to absorb into the skin and the bloodstream, but provide antimicrobial and odor control benefits on surface of the skin. Zinc oxide is usually used in mineral sunscreens and all natural sunscreens as a sun protectant that physically blocks UV rays, but works effectively to kill odor causing bacteria on the skin. We offer a zinc oxide free formula for those with sensitivities.
Plant & flower powders
We use a small amount of rose petal powder, patchouli powder, and lavender powder to add scent and add a light pink hue. Our powders are lovingly hand-ground from flower buds and leaves using a mortar and pestle.
Plant & Seed Oils
Nutrient rich and deeply nourishing, our carefully selected plant & seed oils optimize the benefits of our products.
Aloe Vera
A light, deeply hydrating anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent.
